I've created hundreds of portraits of all kinds of animals for nearly a decade and I love commemorating the incredible and unique bond we have with them. These hand-engraved works of art capture the personality and soul of your animal, whether they still light up your life or live on in your heart and memories.

Trained in both veterinary medicine (DVM) and fine art (I am a Signature Artist in the International Society of Scratchboard Artists), I have a unique relationship and love for the subjects I portray in my work. Carved hair by hair, these custom portraits are a form of hand-illustrated engraving that developed in the 1800s. A panel of Masonite is covered with a thin layer of white Kaolin clay, and an even thinner layer of black India ink on top.

Using a Xacto knife and a miniature fiberglass brush, I carve away at the black ink, exposing variable degrees of the white clay beneath. As textures and highlights are built up layer by layer, an animal's soul begins to peek through.

Portraits are based on your photographs, but I also ask for stories of your beloved animals: How they came into your life, funny or poignant moments, and anything that makes them so special to you and your family! Somehow these stories end up becoming a part of what shines through in their portrait.

Portraits come gift-packaged and ready to frame, sealed with a clear varnish. Each hand-made work takes 2-3 weeks to complete, with updates throughout the process. Shipping is free within the United States.
